Catalyst January2024

Momentum and resolve around "Responsible AI" continue to grow in our region. Admittedly, until October, this was more of a slogan and buzz-phrase. However, following a provocative keynote interview on the importance of hashtag#ResponsibleAI by Kroger CIO/CDO Yael Cosset at the Cintrifuse AGM, a group was formed the NEXT DAY to tackle this issue head-on. This group—the "Cincinnati AI Catalyst"—is a vibrant collaboration of startups, universities, big corporations, and ecosystem leaders. It is dedicated to cultivating a cohesive AI ecosystem that champions responsible AI, fostering innovation, attracting investment, supporting job creation and retention, skill development, and serving as a reliable hub for AI knowledge and education. We're now entering the "action" phase. Yesterday, we split into three focused breakout groups to zero in on startup ideas in critical areas:

  • Standards and Endorsement
  • Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility
  • Education, Skills Development, and Employment Opportunities

The breakout Standards & Endorsement, led by Nate Sowder of Fifth Third Bank, focused extra attention on tools, services, or applications to help startups efficiently meet BigCo AI compliance standards—a challenging question. We were thrilled to include fresh perspectives from new participants, notably from Helen Todd (Human), who, together with Kendra Ramirez, has rallied hundreds in the region around the concept of "Human AI," and Rob Richardson, former chair of University of Cincinnati and founder of MidwestCon who just led a fantastic sold-out event last week at 1819 Innovation Hub about the collision of creativity and AI. We were also thrilled to have Total Quality Logistics join our roster of participating companies. Special thanks to Carl Fraik for his overall leadership, Taffi Hutchings for great event management, and to Ashish Chatterjee, Nate Sowder, Jarrod Humphrey of Xavier University for steering the breakout sessions. This is important work, and these are crazy hard questions, but I've no doubt we'll look back on what we've achieved with pride. (Our kids will thank us as well.)
